Green roofs are typically installed in layers - drainage cell, filtration fabrics, growing media and plants are the bare minimum - with insulation, root barriers, protections layers and irrigation are often included as well. Plants are generally planted specialised growing media and the layers are installed over a waterproof membrane to prevent leaks through to the building envelope.
